Starters Guide: Knowing Musical Instruments



Engage your kids to the wonderful world of music. To help you decide on what instrument to use before going to a music classes in Abu Dhabi it is good if you have knowledge of the different families of the musical Instruments.

Brass Instruments. Produces sound when air is blown inside, majority are made from brass.  This includes trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, bugle and cornet. Lips are placed against the mouthpiece, when air is blown it vibrates inside which produces sound.

String Instruments. Produces sound by vibrating strings. This includes guitar, harp, violin, viola, double base, cello and dulcimer. This instruments can be plucked (guitar, harp), bowed (violin, viola, double bass, cello) or struck (dulcimer).

Woodwind Instruments. Same as brass instrument it also produces sound when air is blown inside. This includes flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, English horn, oboe and saxophone. Air can be blown across the edge (flute), between a surface and a reed (clarinet) or in a double reeds (bassoon, oboe).

Percussion Instruments. Produces sound when its surface is hit by a stick, mallet or with the hand. This includes drums, triangle, cymbals, chimes, xylophone, gong and bells.

Keyboard Instruments. Produces sound by pressing keys of a keyboard. This includes the piano, accordion, harmonium, organ and piano forte.
